2019: STATE OF CLIMATE EMERGENCY DECLARATION BY 11,000 SCIENTISTS
September 9, 2021
“In 2019, Ripple and colleagues (2020) warned of untold suffering and declared a climate emergency with more than 11,000 scientists signing off from 153 countries. They presented graphs of planetary vital signs indicating very disturbing trends, as well as the little progress humanity has made in tackling climate change. Based on this data and on scientists' moral obligation to "clearly warn humanity of any catastrophic threat," they called for transformative change. Since the publication of the article, more than 2,800 additional scientists have signed this declaration of climate emergency (see Supplementary File S1 for the current list of signatories); in addition, 1,990 jurisdictions in 34 countries have now officially declared or recognized a climate emergency (figure 1p) ".
